As I read the article, competency-based learning are strategies that will provide flexibility in the way that credit can be earned or awarded, and provide students with personalized learning opportunities. Some of these strategies that are already being used at my school site are project-based and community-based learning, and credit recovery such as edgenuity.
Educational technology goes hand in hand with these types of strategies. Technology used in the classroom makes competency-based learning more accessible for students, easier to disseminate information, helps keeps students engaged in their work, and allows students to learn at their own pace. This type of strategy can make better use of technology, support new staffing patterns that utilize teacher skills and interests differently, take advantage of learning opportunities outside of school hours and walls, and help identify opportunities to target interventions to meet the specific learning needs of students. |
