This research was orchestrated over a short time frame of only two weeks. Some of my students who participated in this study had technology limitations or internet accessibility issues. A few students did not have technology, lacking cell phones to check their SNS or lacking an account with any SNS to participate in the study. Others did not have access to technology at home, making it only possible to access their SNS at school using the free wifi provided by the school district. Another limitation of this research was the type or frequency of news displayed in each of the Social Network Site used by the students. The quality and quantity of political and social issues displayed within the newsfeed of the various SNS varied from one site to the next. Snapchat mostly promoted personal videos of individuals and displayed very little political or social issues on their newsfeed while Facebook or Twitter had many more articles and videos on political or social issues on their newsfeed.
The basis of my study was to determine whether Social Network Sites can influence students to become more proactive in politics. As we move towards the 21st century, Social Network Sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, has grown exponentially, while voting has decreased. This study was to examine social awareness of political issues through the use of Social Network Sites and voter registration for the age group of 18-25. Based on the data that was collected, my research coincided with most of the research journals that studied this same topic. It concluded that the increase of reading or watching more political or social issues on student's SNS did increase knowledge on those topics but there was no significant statistical change whether students will become more proactive in politics. According to the data, student's knowledge in political and social issues and the likelihood of them registering to vote when they come of age has increased, the data shows no significant change of students getting involved in political or social issues.
The purpose of this research is to use Social Network Sites, such as Twitter, to get more students involved with their communities and to promote civil service. My goal is to determine if Twitter promotes social activism within their communities, promotes and strengthens social capital, and motivates students to become more proactive with social causes by registering to vote.
How will the use of SNS, like Twitter, effect social awareness of political issues that will then in turn encourage the youth between the ages of 18 -25 to register to vote? This a mixed method research study with descriptive designs. I would also use qualitative and quantitative research using self-assessment with my students on their social media participation in social and political issues.
